Cranston City SealPeter Lapolla, Director of Planning, reminds everyone that the Comprehensive Plan public meetings will resume tomorrow night at 6PM at the Cranston Senior Center.

The discussion will focus on the second draft of Comprehensive Plan’s housing element. Visit Cranston’s web site to download a copy of the first six parts of the plan. Those unable to make the meeting can submit feedback on the plan by emailing them to:

Peter Lapolla, Director
Jason Pezzullo, Principal Planner

The photocopied booklets that were distributed before last week’s meeting had the following intro:

At each workshop the goal is to focus on the Comprehensive Plan one element at a time in order to fine tune the goals, policies and action items as presented in each element.

In order to move this process forward we would ask that the following ground rules be applied:

1. The discussion should be focused on the plan element that is the topic of the workshop.

2. The discussion should not focus on specific past or current development proposals/projects.

3. The discussion should be forward looking. While acknowledging what has transpired with the previous Comprehensive Plan is important, if we spend all our time looking back, we will never complete this plan.

Last week’s meeting quickly broke rule 2 and got sidetracked by neighbors’ concerns about the proposed 198-unit Phoenix Terrace. At issue with the neighbors, among other things, was the question of the amount affordable housing the developer has proposed. Residents of the area are worried that affordable housing will undermine the character of the middle class neighborhood.

The Cranston Senior Center is located at 1070 Cranston Street.
